Holidays are the most exciting time of the year, so most of us don't give a second thought about the car we left behind and how airport parking really works, but the business of managing a car park packed with thousands of cars is a precise one.

Most airport parking is a 24/7 experience with a constant flow of people dropping off or collecting their cars, so there's a real challenge in organising cars where they can be found quickly, coping with different vehicle sizes and shapes, and even managing cars that never get collected.

Motoring magazine Autocar went behind the scenes at IAPA member Purple Parking's site in Gatwick to find out how a park-and-ride service works.
